Safe Defense is an innovative approach to peace skills, conflict resolution, and self-defense. Its conflict resolution skill set, called PeaceDNA, provides a safe and common language and a critical path leading from Conflict identification to peaceful resolution. PeaceDNA uses your own natural talking & listening skills and directs them to navigate Person-to-Person conflict (P2PConflict) for yourself and for others. It's like a map to follow. Be a peacemaker for yourself by handling assault and P2PConflict without violence or by helping 2 others who need assistance...you...a 'street mediator'. Understand how conflict resolution works and how to handle distractions and offenses (called FOULs). This knowledge will boost your confidence in pursuing a peaceful approach. You can become a community asset and leader by embodying peacemaker status and possessing skills as an ad-hoc mediator following PeaceDNA.
The PeaceDNA P2PConflict resolution model and approach are respectful and agile. It's built on 6 Guiding Questions, Kanji Listening, Rephrasing for Agreement, and FOUL Buster. The specific skill sets (tools) are comprehensive and include a smart 'FOUL Buster' for handling verbal FOULs and 'PeaceDNA' Guiding Questions used for diagnosing & navigating to a Peace Agreement...for yourself & for others. And more, there's Peace Moves, a 2-footed hopping 'move the target' no-contact self-defense practice. You will find it interesting to know, at least.
The complete 4-part program (linked below) consists of 12 brief (:05) YouTube video lessons. They are amateurish (I made them), but they are quite informative. Also linked below are additional supporting group-leader materials (Posters, suggested debrief questions for leading group circles) plus a final assessment (e-test) with a pdf Certificate of Completion (soon). There is nothing to buy, ever! Your contact info is not required. Please check out Safe Defense videos and share these ideas with your family, friends, and community. PAY IT FORWARD! Thank you.
FIGHT/FLIGHT/FIGURE IT OUT (with Safe Defense)
A crucial aspect of clear communication is agreeing on the definitions of words, as this facilitates understanding and progress.
FOULs are any words or actions intended to hurt, harm or intimidate. Learning how to peacefully and respectfully handle word FOULs is critical to de-escalating and navigating conflict resolution. This video contains 2 lessons.
Person-to-person conflict resolution involves a series of 3 critical steps, just like a recipe for cooking a dish. And like cooking, if you skip any step, you risk failure. PeaceDNA is a recipe for creating a peace agreement. This video contains 4 lessons.
Peace Moves is a non-violent self-defense technique that involves moving your body away from an attacker by hopping on both feet. Each pattern ends with FOUL Buster to address the attacker's intention. The technique also includes Peace Hands, a 'Force Field' that doesn't harm the attacker. The video contains 5 lessons.
Engage students with the FOUL Catcher 'toy', which teaches and practices FOUL Buster. The PDF template and instruction video is available under 'Teaching Aids'.
Enhance the Safe Defense lessons with these teacher aids; the FOUL Catcher exercise, a 'No FOUL Zone' wall poster, and suggested group debrief questions to facilitate discussion after watching video lessons.
Use this theater script as a basis for either troupe production or class discussion. Content introduces and develops non-violent attitudes and skill sets specific to middle-school Conflict.

OVERVIEW
To understand the wider scope of Safe Defense and P2PConflict Resolution, start with an important new term: 'FOUL'. This word will include any act or word intended to hurt, harm, or intimidate. Regardless of the act, violent or slight, it's this intention that defines a FOUL, not what they did. Many mini-FOULs happen daily at school, workplace, and home. We often just ignore them. Sometimes we use FOULs ourselves in self-defense (Fight/Flight), and sometimes we use them with malice. Traditional self-defense thinking accepts using a counter-FOUL to stop the attacker is justified. Of course, a strong offense is a good defense. And all of this to say: this is self-defense, true, but it is not 'True' self-defense.
A 'True' self-defense would have to be a FOUL-free approach to protecting ourselves. And this would need to include a 'Peace Map for navigation of the non-FOUL route. This is why Safe Defense is truly unique. Safe Defense is a method of protecting yourself without using FOULs.There is Fight, and there is Flight; we use FOULs when we defend ourselves, and we have every right! So with intention to FOUL for self-defense that is There is a Peace based some daily, violent & non-violent (albeit offensive) act. In other words, a violent punch is every bit a FOUL as a hurtful put-down or name-calling action. This means any violence is a FOUL, but not every FOUL is violent. Again, a FOUL carries the intention to hurt, harm or intimidate. Rude behavior is only a FOUL when the intention is attached.
Accepting the scope and definition of FOUL, the term self-defense can also be broadened. Safe Defense is the self-protective knowledge that covers the non-dangerous (albeit offensive) FOULs. Reaching in application from general physical This broader view of what a self-defense situation includes non-dangerous 'assaults', such as harsh words, threats, name-calling, accusing, etc.
Safe Defense, in addition to FOUL Buster, includes PeaceDNA , a simple but comprehensive 'map' or model to show how P2PConflict works: Conflict Resolution knowledge. Knowing how to navigate from P2PConflict to peace agreement takes understanding the map and what's what. PeaceDNA lays out the required 6 Guiding Questions (GQ) in a checklist form, leading directly to P2PConflict resolution. Applicable for your own situation or when helping others as an ad-hoc mediator. It's 12 GQs organized in 3 steps (Conditions, Positions & Remedy) are outlined in detail herein.
Safe Defense is a form of 'True' self-defense that enables you to protect yourself without injuring your attacker (J. Mitose). Safe Defensed utilizes specific language skills and physical techniques to help you avoid danger and create peace.
Some conflicts are difficult to solve because of obstacles that prevent a peaceful resolution. Frequent obstacles, or FOULs, can be managed with the help of Safe Defense features, such as FOUL Buster. Once these obstacles are removed, following the PeaceDNA can lead to a peaceful agreement. It is important to note that a lot of the fear associated with conflict can be managed once you have a clear plan to follow. Safe Defense is a versatile tool that promotes professionalism, builds trust and relationships, and contributes to a positive community ethic.
