Safe Defense is a unique self-defense skill set that focuses on conflict resolution and peace agreements, even if people ultimately agree to disagree. It uses safe and natural language to navigate person-to-person conflicts, de-escalate tense situations, and guide ad-hoc street mediation. The Safe Defense video curriculum offers strategies for dealing with everyday verbal conflicts and extends to skills for evading certain dangerous physical threats. The 12 YouTube video lessons are brief (5 minutes) and direct, although the animation may be amateurish. Links to all videos, a final assessment, and a Certificate of Completion are free, along with additional supporting materials. There is nothing to buy, ever, and your contact info is not requested. Please read on, check out the curriculum, and share these ideas with your family, friends, and community.
Safe Defense proposes a redefinition of the term 'self-defense' and introduces a new concept called 'FOUL'. A FOUL is any act or speech intended to hurt, harm, or intimidate another person. This can be verbal, such as name-calling and taunting, or physical, such as punching and violence. Regardless of the size or nature of the action, if the intention is to inflict harm, it qualifies as a FOUL. Safe Defense is a form of 'True' self-defense that enables you to protect yourself without injuring your attacker, as defined by J. Mitose. Safe Defense is based on this principle and utilizes specific language skills and physical techniques to help you avoid danger and create peace.
Some conflicts are difficult to solve because of obstacles that prevent a peaceful resolution. Frequent obstacles, or FOULs, can be managed with the help of Safe Defense features, such as FOUL Buster. Once these obstacles are removed, following the PeaceDNA can lead to a peaceful agreement. It is important to note that a lot of the fear associated with conflict can be managed once you have a clear plan to follow. Safe Defense is a versatile tool that promotes professionalism, builds trust and relationships, and contributes to a positive community ethic.
FIGHT/FLIGHT/FIGURE IT OUT (with Safe Defense)
Safe Defense's Peace curriculum practice is designed to help you achieve authentic power. It is based on understanding the dynamics of Conflict, Fouls, & Remedy. The program uses your own natural language and words by presenting a map or recipe for navigating through Conflict for both yourself and for others. Along with de-escalation skills (FOUL Buster) and a physical self-defense technique that involves moving the attacker's target (Peace Moves), Safe Defense offers a comprehensive program for both peacemaking and self-protection.
A crucial aspect of clear communication is agreeing on the definitions of words, as this facilitates understanding and progress.
FOULs are any words or actions intended to hurt, harm or intimidate. Learning how to peacefully and respectfully handle word FOULs is critical to de-escalating and navigating conflict resolution. This video contains 2 lessons.
Person-to-person conflict resolution involves a series of 3 critical steps, just like a recipe for cooking a dish. And like cooking, if you skip any step, you risk failure. PeaceDNA is a recipe for creating a peace agreement. This video contains 4 lessons.
Peace Moves is a non-violent self-defense technique that involves moving your body away from an attacker by hopping on both feet. Each pattern ends with FOUL Buster to address the attacker's intention. The technique also includes Peace Hands, a 'Force Field' that doesn't harm the attacker. The video contains 5 lessons.
Engage students with the FOUL Catcher 'toy', which teaches and practices FOUL Buster. The PDF template and instruction video is available under 'Teaching Aids'.
Enhance the Safe Defense lessons with these teacher aids; the FOUL Catcher exercise, a 'No FOUL Zone' wall poster, and suggested group debrief questions to facilitate discussion after watching video lessons.
Use this theater script as a basis for either troupe production or class discussion. Content introduces and develops non-violent attitudes and skill sets specific to middle-school Conflict.
