Safe Defense is a unique 'True' self-defense skill set built around the potential for conflict resolution & peace agreement, even if agreeing to respectfully disagree. It is safe & natural language developed for navigating person-to-person conflict, de-escalating a tense situation, and guiding ad-hoc street mediation. Safe Defense video curriculum teaches strategy for dealing with verbal everyday 'FOULs' and extends into skills for evading certain dangerous physical threats. The 12 You-Tube video Lessons are brief (5 min) and direct. (Please forgive my laughably amateurish animation!) Links to all videos, a final assessment, and a Certificate of Completion are free and offered below, as well as additional supporting materials. Please read on, check out the curriculum, and share these ideas with other family, friends, and your larger community.
Safe Defense recasts the term 'self-defense' and adds a new one: 'FOUL'. A FOUL is any act (or word) intended to hurt, harm or intimidate. A FOUL may be verbal such as name calling and taunting or physical such as punching and violence. Big or small, insulting or demeaning, if the intent is to hurt, harm, or intimidate, it's a FOUL. Safe-Defense is 'True' self-defense because you "protect yourself without injuring your attacker" (J. Mitose*). Any True self-defense works with an intention to diffuse and/or understand, not an intention to harm. It is this intention that makes Safe Defense a True self-defense with specific language skills that extend into physical 'move the target' (your body) techniques for situations that threaten danger.
Many problems & conflicts are difficult to address because there are FOULs blocking the peaceful path. Removing FOULs with Safe Defense features such as FOUL Buster and then following the PeaceDNA Critical Path (to Peace Agreement) means that the mystery of what to do next, is solved. A lot of the fear around conflict is shown to be quite manageable once you have a map...once you know what to do. Safe Defense is a broad-range tool that maintains professionalism, builds relationship and trust, and contributes to a positive community ethic.
FIGHT/FLIGHT/FIGURE IT OUT (with Safe Defense)
Authentic Power will come with Safe Defense Peace curriculum practice because it’s based on understanding what’s going on with Conflict, Fouls & Remedy. It uses your own natural language and words by laying out a map or recipe for how to navigate through Conflict (PeaceDNA). This, along with de-escalation skills (FOUL Buster) and a physical self-defense built around moving the attacker's target (Peace Moves), makes Safe Defense a full spectrum program for both peacemaking & self protection.
A big part of a 'Safe & Common' language is being on the same page with what words mean what definitions. This makes understanding and moving forward much easier to do.
FOULs are any words or actions intended to hurt, harm or intimidate. Learning how to peacefully and respectfully handle word FOULs is critical to de-escalating and navigating conflict resolution. This video contains 2 lessons.
Conflict Resolution does have a 'Critical Path' of steps to follow just like a recipe for cooking a dish. Follow the recipe and be successful. Leave something out and you risk failure. Include the critical things, follow the directions, and you succeed every time. PeaceDNA is the recipe for creating Peace Agreement. This video contains 4 lessons.
Peace Moves is a method of moving an unarmed attacker's target (your body) with 2-footed Hopping to 'out-of-acceptance' positions. Every Peace Moves Hopping pattern ends with FOUL Buster to address the intention behind the attack. Also shown is Peace Hands, a kind of 'Force Field' that works without injuring the attacker. This video contains 5 lessons.
Experience shows that using this FOUL Catcher 'toy' to teach & practice FOUL Buster, especially to older elementary students, is both engaging and easy. The template is offered under Teaching Aids.
Enhance your Safe Defense lessons with these teacher aids; the FOUL Catcher template, a 'No FOUL Zone' wall poster & a list of suggested group debrief questions to facilitate discussion after watching videos.
Use this theater script as a basis for either troupe production or class discussion. Content introduces and develops non-violent attitudes and skill sets specific to middle-school Conflict.
